Gates

We make a large variety of gates on site in both our panel and joiner’s workshops (take a look at work in progress here). They are made to order and can therefore be made to meet customer requirements. Most gates can be pressure treated .

Field & Dales Gates (Hardwood & Softwood)

Field and dales gatesField gates are usually used by farmers and have therefore historically been most commonly made in pressure treated larch which is a softwood and gives more flexibility and durability than some other softwoods. However, we also make these gates in redwood (softwood) and meranti (hardwood). Our field gates come as standard with 5 bars and are diamond braced.

Field gate, pressure treated from Empress fencingField gates (see pictures, above & right) can be made up to 14’ wide and the standard height is 48” to the top of the top bar (51.5” overall height to the top of the round). However, they can be made to a specific width or height and can also be made with extra rails in or with a solid bottom bar (prices for these alterations available on request).

Dales Gates

dales GatesDales gates (see pictures below & right) are very similar to field gates and are made to roughly the same specifications. However, the bracing is different to the standard field gate and therefore gives a slightly different look to the finished product.

Dales gatesHanging both these gates can be quite a precise task and you are advised to either speak to our staff or your gate fitter about possible hinges and fasteners to use before providing us with the actual sizes you wish the gates to be made to.

Bent Artery Gates (hardwood & softwood)

Bent artery gates are usually made in hardwood (meranti). However, we also make these gates in redwood & larch (softwood). Our bent artery gates come as standard with 5 bars. They provide a slightly more decorative alternative to the standard field gate and are particularly popular for use on country properties.

Paled gatesPaled Gates (hardwood & softwood)

Our wide selection of paled gates are handmade to order in our joiners’ shop using a wide variety of both softwood and hardwood timbers. They can also be made in a wide variety of styles and are sized according to customer specifications, making this type of gate a very flexible option for many customers.

Paled gatesSoftwood paled gates can be made in either larch or redwood. Both timbers can be pressure treated or hand stained to suit individual requirements. Larch is more flexible although redwood planes up more smoothly. Hardwood paled gates are mainly made using meranti. This is a light hardwood which gives a good finish. Hardwood gates do not need pressure treating but can be oiled or varnished as required.

The gate itself can also be arched topped, dipped topped, flat or staggered (see picture, left) to give various different effects.

Paled gates from Empress fencing in Clitheroe LancashireThe majority of paled gates are made with a morticed and tenoned frame but there is the cheaper option of just having them made with a ledge, brace and batton backing to them. There is also the more expensive option of having the top bar morticed and the pales set into the mortice holes. All these options ensure that you are able to design a gate which meets your exact requirements.

Garden Gates

We manufacture several types of gates which provide a slightly cheaper alternative to the solid framed gates and are popular options for the ‘back garden gate’.

Tongue and grooved wooden door from Empress FencingThe tongue & grooved LBB door is a popular option for people who want a solid door. The doors are made using either 5/8” or 7/8” redwood boards, therefore offering the customer two price & quality options. The boards are screwed onto backing rails & the door is sanded down to Garden gateprovide a smooth finish.

We do not offer pressure treatment for these gates so they do need hand staining before hanging.

Advice on this is available on our customer handout – “Caring for your gates” (download it here) – or from our staff.
