Paled Driveway Gate Made to Order

A paled driveway gate uses spaced vertical pales on a strong frame, giving a wide entrance that stays light and open. We make each paled driveway gate to order. You choose the top shape, the timber and the size to suit your drive.

Our shop stocks standard garden gates off the shelf. A driveway is rarely a standard width, though, which is why these gates are made to order instead.

Arched, Flat or Staggered Tops

There are three top styles. An arched top rises to a curve at the centre and suits traditional houses and farm entrances. A flat top gives a clean, level line that works on newer homes.

A staggered top steps the pales up or down in groups. It adds interest without the formality of a full arch. If you are fitting a pair of gates, the arch or stagger can run across both leaves so they read as one.

Timber Choices for a Paled Driveway Gate

The softwood options are larch and redwood. Both are cost-effective, take paint or stain well and suit most drives. The hardwood options are sapele and iroko, which give a deeper colour and a heavier, more solid feel.

On an exposed lane or a drive facing the prevailing wind, hardwood is worth weighing up. Our article on the best wood for garden gates sets out the differences.

Why a Paled Driveway Gate Is Easier to Live With

A paled driveway gate weighs less than a solid one of the same size. That means less strain on the hinges, less risk of the gate dropping, and an easier swing each day. The gaps also let the wind through, which matters on the hillier roads around Pendle and Bowland.

In addition, open pales keep the view clear. You can see traffic and pedestrians as you pull out, and visitors can see the house from the road.

Measuring and Posts

Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom, and give us the smallest figure. Tell us whether you want a single gate or a pair, and which way it should open. A drive that slopes up may need the gate to open outwards.

Driveway gates need heavier posts than fences. We stock timber posts in larger sections, and our gate fittings cover hinges and latches for wider gates.

How Ordering Works

Call us with your measurements, top style and timber. We will confirm the details before anything is made. Made-to-order work takes longer than stock items, so ask about timing when you order.

We supply the gate, and you or your fitter hang it. Our guide on how to look after your gates will help it last. For other designs, see our driveway gates and field gates.
