Sawley Fencing by the River Ribble

Sawley is a small village on the banks of the River Ribble, between Chatburn and Gisburn. It is best known for the ruins of Sawley Abbey and the old bridge over the river. Homes here are mostly stone cottages and farmhouses, many with gardens that run down towards the water or back onto fields.

Sawley fencing has to cope with two things in particular. The ground near the river stays wet for long periods, and open fields leave gardens exposed to the wind.

Sawley Fencing on Wet Riverside Ground

Timber posts standing in waterlogged soil eventually soften at ground level. So drainage around each post matters. Put a layer of gravel in the bottom of every hole before setting the post. Then fix it with 20kg Postcrete and shape the top so rain runs away from the timber.

A gravel board along the base of each panel also helps. It keeps the panel itself clear of the wet ground, so the lowest boards dry out between showers. Our guide on what causes fence posts to rot explains more.

Durapost for Damp Gardens

For riverside gardens, Durapost is worth a close look. It is a steel post system that will not rot, warp or crack, and it is maintenance free. Standard timber panels slide into the posts, and a matching gravel board keeps them off the soil. It comes in Anthracite or Olive Grey, and Olive Grey sits quietly against fields and hedges. It is the most common request we see for Sawley fencing.

Panels for Stone Cottages and Farmhouses

A 6ft feather edge fence panel gives solid privacy and stands up well to wind. Where you want a more open feel, our decorative fence panels and trellis let light through while still marking the boundary. Many village gardens use trellis on top of a low wall to soften the stone.

Posts for Exposed Boundaries

Field-side fences take the full force of the weather. So use a heavier post at corners and gate openings. The 100mm x 100mm rough sawn timber post comes in 2.4m, 3.0m and 3.6m lengths. Add an anti rattle clamp to each panel to stop it knocking in a gale. That makes a real difference to how long Sawley fencing lasts.

Why Use Local Sawley Fencing

Ordering Sawley fencing from a local yard means talking to people who know the riverside lanes around Sawley. We can help you count panels, posts and clips for your run, so everything arrives together. All of our timber is pressure-treated softwood, and our fixings are galvanised for the Lancashire weather.

Sawley Fencing Delivery

The lanes around Sawley are narrow, especially near the bridge. Our drivers use a pickup or small open-back transit and will avoid blocking field gates. They cannot lift panels over walls, so please add access notes in the order comments box.
