Tongue & Groove Gate Made to Order

A tongue & groove gate has smooth boards that lock edge to edge, so there are no gaps to see through. It is ledged and braced on the back, which keeps it square and stops it dropping. We make this gate to order in pressure-treated whitewood, with either a flat or an arched top.

For a standard opening, our tongue and groove gate is available off the shelf. The made-to-order version is for openings that need a different width or height.

Ledged and Braced Construction

On the back of the gate, horizontal ledges hold the boards together. A diagonal brace runs between them. The brace should always run upwards from the hinge side, so it carries the weight back towards the hinges.

Flat or Arched Tongue & Groove Gate

A flat top gives a simple, practical look. An arched top softens the line and suits cottage gardens and older stone houses. Both are made to order, so you can match the height of a neighbouring fence or wall.

Treatment and Finishing

The whitewood is pressure-treated to protect it from rot and insects. The smooth boards take paint or stain well once the timber has dried out. Leave it a few weeks after delivery before you apply a finish.

For an arched gate, a pair of curved hinges follows the shape neatly. Our curved gate hinge set is made for this.

Measure your opening at the top, middle and bottom, and use the smallest figure. Then call us with the size, top style and hinge side. We will confirm the details before the gate is made. Made-to-order work takes longer than stock items, so ask about timing when you order.
